Michael Kenna – a master at work

In B+W 304 we introduce Michael Kenna’s exclusive new Darkroom Diaries series.

Over five chapters, Michael will discuss with Bosham Gallery’s Luke Whitaker the process of shooting on film and his unique approach to making sliver gelatin prints by hand in his darkroom. In part one, he reflects on his 50-year love affair with analogue.

Michael says, ‘I think there is something very special about staying faithful to the original analogue process of capturing an image on film and making silver prints with wet chemistry. It can certainly be time-consuming and complicated, but ultimately very rewarding, as the photographer is involved in the process from beginning to end and able to retain so much creative control and freedom.’

Running alongside the series is an online exhibition of Michael Kenna’s most collected work made over the past 50 years. Hosted by Bosham Gallery, it features the remaining Artist Proof editions of photographs whose numbered limited editions have now sold out. The exhibition, entitled Retired Negatives, runs until 17 December 2025 at boshamgallery.com.
