In B+W 304 the American photographer discusses the challenges of working in such a vast landscape and how he went about capturing its serenity and calmness.
‘That’s my goal in creating these images,’ he says, ‘while utilising my background in fashion photography to focus on the form and textures in a way that’s different from a more documentary approach’.
Including the colonies of penguins that inhabit the lower slopes of the bergs give a sense of scale, while shooting in black & white allowed Drew to zero in on the aesthetics. He also used his portraiture expertise to create his arresting images.
‘One of those tools used often in fashion photography is a lower angle,’ he says. ‘This elongates the shape of the model, or the flow of a dress. I’ve consistently used that in my work with wildlife, in a way not only to accentuate shape and form but also to conceptually elevate my subjects’.
