Fine art photographer Jasper Goodall’s Into the Wild Night project draws on a deep well of influences, from personal tragedy to Swedish folklore. In B+W 313 he talks to Nick Smith about his fascination with nocturnal landscapes, the technical challenges of working in the dark, and how his background in illustration feeds into his work.

‘I have a long history with fear, dating back to panic attacks in my twenties,’ says Jasper. ‘But there’s always been a part of me that’s wanted to confront fear in different ways.

‘I wanted to feel something that felt dangerous. I liked playing with the idea that it was a bit frightening. Then there’s a slightly gleeful part of me that wants the viewer to imagine themselves there and shudder.’
