For more than 60 years Daidō Moriyama has challenged the conventional notion of photography with his radical approach and dense, grainy images. Witness to the changes that transformed Japan in the second half of the 20th century, his images capture the essence of an evolving society.

Our latest issue (B+W 306) features an interview with Mark Holborn, the editor of a lavish new anthology of the four seminal photobooks that form the foundation of the artist’s photographic career.

Mark says: ‘All great artists change the way we see the world. Once you’ve seen the world through the eyes of Moriyama, everything is coloured by that. His view is contagious. Once you’ve seen it, you can’t shake it off. What happens is that you go down the street and you start to see Daidō Moriyama shots.’
