Over the past 20 years Annette Louise Solakoglu has roamed the streets of Istanbul with her camera, observing and documenting its myriad contrasts and cultures.

This deep exploration has led to a refreshingly original portrait of the city that’s far removed from the colourful, chaotic scenes we may be more familiar with.

In our latest issue (B+W 306) Annette discusses her considered approach to street photography and her love of Istanbul, a place she calls her part-time home.

‘I love discovering and exploring places on my own,’ she says. ‘I often don’t know if I’m going to be in a place for an hour or a whole day. So I settle in, switch off my phone and try to be present, listening to what comes from within. I find that when the senses are all alert, it comes together’.
